Chinese Hats: Conical Hats

The conical hat, rice hat, paddy hat or coolie hat as if it is filled with water it can be worn as a cooling device. It is a simple style of straw hat originating in East and Southeast Asia, particularly Vietnam, China, Japan, Korea, Cambodia, Philippines, and Indonesia. It is also worn in some parts of Bangladesh, India, and Mexico. It has a conical shape and is kept on the head by a cloth chin strap; an internal band of the same material keeps the hat itself from resting on the wearer's head. Conical hats are used primarily as protection from the sun and rain when spending long amouts of time outside.

African Mens' Hats

In this post I will be talking about hats from Africa. The horned headdress is worn by male hunters and warriors of the Somba of Northern Ghana. High ranking leaders in Kuba in the Democratic Republic of Congo wear ornate hats covered with glass beads and cowry shells in important ceremonies. The adult Bamileke men of Cameroon wear a red cotton hat which has many projecting cylindrical burls, reinforced with wood to give a three-dimensional effect.
